Starbucks is closing hundreds of coffeehouses across North America as the company reviews store performance and continues its broader “Back to Starbucks” strategy. The coffee chain announced plans to close approximately 250 locations, representing about 1% of its more than 18,000 North American coffeehouses.
California is among the states affected by the latest round of closures. While Starbucks has not released a complete official Starbucks closing stores list, reporting has identified dozens of locations in Southern California that appear to be shutting down.

The latest closures are part of Starbucks’ effort to reshape its store network and focus investment on locations that can deliver the customer experience and financial performance the company expects.
According to Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams, the company reviewed its North American coffeehouse portfolio and identified stores where it did not see a sustainable path to the desired customer experience or acceptable financial performance.
The company said affected employees will receive support during the transition, including opportunities to transfer to other stores where possible. Employees who cannot be placed elsewhere will receive severance support.
Which Starbucks Are Closing in California?
Starbucks has not officially published a complete public list of every location included in the latest 250-store closure plan. However, the Los Angeles Times reported that 36 Southern California locations appeared to be affected after checking Starbucks’ app listings and confirming that the stores were no longer listed or appeared permanently closed.
The reported locations include stores in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Monica, Burbank, Pasadena, Santa Ana, Ontario, San Bernardino, Pasadena, Temecula, Upland and other Southern California communities. The newspaper noted that Starbucks had not independently confirmed the full list.

Starbucks Closing 250 Locations
The 250 closures are part of a larger restructuring effort. Starbucks previously closed 627 stores across North America and Europe in 2025 and reduced approximately 900 non-retail positions.
At the same time, Starbucks is continuing to invest in its remaining coffeehouses. The company said it has already redesigned more than 1,000 locations across the United States and Canada since late 2025, adding changes intended to make stores more comfortable and welcoming.
The company’s latest financial results also show that its North American business has been improving. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, North American comparable-store sales increased 8.1%, while U.S. comparable-store sales rose 7.9%.
